Our Process

OUR PROCESS

Every knife begins life as a bar of high quality, high carbon steel. Handle tang and blade are being forged from many times in the forge fire, and hand-hammered to shape on the anvil. Profile and rough grinding is done free-hand, then each blade is individually heat-treated, with quenching temperatures achieved in the forge followed by hardening in commercial quenching oil. After hardening, the blade is triple tempered giving consideration to the probable use of the knife as indicated by the particular blade design.

Because each HASTINGS-PARRISH KNIFE is completely hand crafted, blade length and other dimensions are approximate, and will vary slightly from knife to knife. Therefore, each is uniquely one of a kind.

The process is slow and time consuming. It involves a period of waiting for delivery to be accomplished; however, we will not change the procedure merely for the sake of producing more knives. Quality is top priority, and retaining the purity of the art/craft is a primary aim in the production of these fine knives.

We apologize for the delay, and thank you for your patience. We are confident that the wait will be rewarding and hope you will agree.

CUSTOM WORK

Custom orders are accepted on a very limited basis. Factors of  current delivery schedule, practicality of a design, and materials desired will be carefully considered.

Acceptance and cost of custom orders will be determined after all factors  - including time - are evaluated.

The extra and options available are often enough to help you obtain your own one of a kind.

DAMASCUS STEEL

The “Damascus” steel utilized in HASTINGS - PARRISH KNIVES is made in this shop by Bladesmith Dwayne Parrish, and is of the pattern-welded type. The necessary welding is done by hand with forged heat, hammer and anvil.

The process basically involves a five piece construction:  three pieces low carbon and two pieces high carbon. These are welded together, cut and welded six more times, resulting in a bar   of approximately 320 layers.

The steel constructed in this manner has given consistently satisfactory results. Nice pattern, high hardness, toughness, superior edge holding, and ease of sharpening.

Reports from those who have chosen to use, rather than merely collect these unique blades have been most pleasing. That is why we offer Damascus steel for standard knives in addition to the Custom collector items.

Models 10 through 100 are available in either high carbon  or Damascus steel. Please refer to price sheet for cost difference.
